ARTIST STATEMENT

Both visually and in terms of content, ARRANGEMENTS AND COLOR define the work of Nieke Lemmens.  As such, she is rooted in the tradition of painting, which she at the same time questions with the fragile and process-oriented character of her work. She also feels connected to the work of often anonymous craftsmen and folk artists who have been using these essential painterly elements to react and connect with the world for centuries.
She works in an inquisitive manner, where every action calls for a reaction, and every certainty is questioned again. This constant countermovement means freedom to her. Existing laws, systems and patterns are playfully broken down and undermined in her work. By allowing chance and embracing temporariness, space is created for change.
By facilitating the unpredictable deviations, the possibilities are inexhaustible and, in a seemingly simple way, she gives shape to the endless variety and richness of our complex and wondrous world.
